African Beginnings operates from Waterfield Farm, Assagay, just outside Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. There are currently 126 trained employees working on the farm. The company is the single biggest prepared fresh produce supplier in the province.
PACK HOUSE The pack house at Waterfield Farm operates from a 1,200 sq m facility on the farm. This purpose designed facility has been in operation for the last two years. All the vegetables are washed in jacuzzi baths prior to preparation. New automated sealing equipment has been installed for the sealing of the pillow packs. The high care unit, where the preparation is done, has an air filtration system that ensures no outside contamination.
Stainless steel dipping shoots and preparation tables in conjunction with the chemicals that are used in the cleaning process ensure the high standard achieved. All chemicals are bio degradable and are approved by the SABS. The floors in the high care area are epoxy sealed, and random monthly micro biological testing is carried out
All refrigerated areas have new fridges, and the high care area is kept at a constant 12C with filtered air to ensure the cold chain is maintained.
Protective clothing, with different colour coded clothing for the different areas is worn by the staff and constant ongoing training is provided in the staff's mother tongue.
A back up system for the water supply is in place which provides one days supply of fresh water to the facility in the event of a disruption of the water supply.
The is facility is HACCP approved and we adhere to all criteria using SABS approved biodegradable food grade chemicals.
The products are delivered in refrigerated trucks ensuring the continuation of the cold chain.
